Author Guidelines

PLEASE ADD THE ISSUE TYPE "GENERAL ISSUE" or "SPECIAL ISSUE" TO NOTE FOR EDITOR

Original articles should be 5,000-8,000 words (including notes and references), though longer or shorter articles may be considered, such as book reviews, interviews, artistic contributions in other media such as image/video/audio. Artistic contributions may be hosted on the Technophany website as media or as text description.

General Requirements

– Articles must be ready for publication according to The Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS), 17th edition. Use the Notes-Bibliography (NB) System instead of the Author-Date System as referred to in this sample paper here. Authors are encouraged to use our sample template for their articles here. 

– Before submission, the author must obtain permission for copyrighted material (such as images, graphs etc.).

– Use British English standards unless American English is specified for the issue, or used in a quotation.  

– Articles should include an abstract (150 words) and up to 5-8 keywords. Abstracts should be a single paragraph without formatting (such as italics, bold). 

– Authors should include a short biography (50 words) below the abstract and keywords.

 

Citations, Notes and References

– Citations and notes should use automatic footnote and endnote numbering in Word.

– First citations should include the full reference including the page number. 

– Shortened citations: After the first citation, use shortened citations in Footnotes with the author’s surname, abreviated version of title and page number followed by a period “Bergson, Creative Evolution, 224”.

– Notes should be brief and kept to a minimum, or incorporated into the text.

– References: A full list of references should be included at the end of the article in alphabetical order by author surname.

 

Formatting

– Page formatting: The document must be set at A4 standard size. The entire document (including notes and references) should be double-spaced with 1-inch (2.5 cm) margins on all sides. Articles must be formatted to 12pt standard font such as Times or Times New Roman. Each page should be numbered in the bottom-centre of the page.
– Quotations: For single and double quotation marks, it should be placed outside periods and commas, but inside semicolons. Other than quotes within quotes, double quotation marks should be used in all cases. Quotations more than four lines should be placed in single-spaced block quotations. Do not use quotation marks on block quotations. 
– Titles: Titles of books, artworks, films, musical albums, journal etc. are italicized. Titles of exhibitions, journal articles, essays, poems, songs, short stories, etc. appear within double quotation marks (“ ”)
– Numbers: Numbers one through ninety-nine are spelled out, for all other numbers; numerals are used (i.e.,100).
– Dashes: “en-dashes” (double hyphen: – ) are used to separate durations, i.e. 1969–70 (without space in between), as well as to separate a series of page numbers in notes (also with no space). “em-dashes” (—) are used to denote a dramatic break in sentence structure or to set off an amplifying or explanatory element.

– Dates/Years: Consistent with British format: 6 February 2005 / 1960s / 1990 / centuries are spelled out, i.e. the twentieth century, and hyphenated when used as an adjective, i.e. twentieth-century architecture.
– Tables and Figures: List of tables, figures or other graphics should be written at the end of the article in the same file. Author should provide a separate copy of the file which is used in the article in high resolution (150-300dpi, PNG / JPEG / TIFF format). 

 

Figures and Images

– Figures or images should be submitted as high-resolution JPGs or TIFFs (300 dpi), or as EPS files with all fonts embedded. Tables should be made and submitted in Microsoft Word or rtf.
– Videos should be sent as a high-resolution MP4 to be hosted on the Technophany Vimeo or other video streaming platform. 
– Audio files should be sent as MP3 or OGG to be hosted on the Technophany SoundCloud or other audio streaming platform.

Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.
  • Referencing is in Chicago Style Footnotes-Bibliography; Ibid and op. cit. are not used, but author surname, text and page number are provided instead (this is for reformatting purposes).
  • Issue type has been written in the comments for the editor
  • All identifying marks and author biographies have been removed for peer review. The article is anonymous.
  • The text is in double-spaced or uses 1.5 spacing; uses a 12-point font (preferably Times New Roman); employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
